Labradorite is a feldspar mineral.

Feldspar is the name given to a group of naturally occurring alumino-silicate minerals containing varying amounts of potassium, sodium, calcium, and/or lithium. The feldspar group of minerals is by far the most abundant group of minerals in the Earth's crust, making up about 50% of all rocks.

The crystals are often found in thin and tabular shapes with colors ranging from purple to grey blue, green, yellow, and brown. The mineral has a pearly sheen and some specimens have a schiller effect/labradorescence (an optical illusion that makes stones appear to light up internally).

Labradorite crystal gets its name from the town of Labrador, Canada, where the stone was discovered.  Today you can find Labradorite deposits in pockets all over the world, but it is particularly prevalent in Nordic countries like Norway and Finland, as well as North American countries like the USA and Canada.  According to native Canadian tribal lore, Labradorite is said to contain the Northern Lights, known as the Aurora Borealis.
